Hi there!

Today we resumed unit 3 just where we left it before the exam. We worked  on Writing: a review, where we did all of the activities on pages 48-49. Remember ! Thursday next week is your headline to hand in your review on a book / film (read the Planning what to write and the Writing sections for more info)
We also did past & present participles on page 48, here´s the extra PARTICIPLES activity for next Tuesday´s class. Besides, we did a bit of weak/strong adjectives on the same page, please find more info in this STRONG / WEAK ADJECTIVES REMINDER ...

And then we just had time for one video activity on Microfinance -page 50- (the interview with Sarita Gupta). That was all!

Please, do exercise 1b on page 52 in your textbooks for Tuesday. We´re starting unit 4 already!
Have a nice weekend and see you then!

WELCOME BACK! February, 25th

Hi guys!

Back we are from our February tests, which we checked in class last night. Please, keep in mind they are just indicators of your progress, and also that I feel sorry for those who did not pass some part(s). Fortunately, there´s still lots of time ahead and we can get things better.  Definitely!
Here are some of the most recurrent mistakes (please, see how they can be fixed!)
Then, Toby came in the class and he asked you about the exam: its parts, marks, what you found more difficult, the easiest, etc. He also gave you this DICTATION, which proved not to be a harsh one :-)

On Thursday (tomorrow!) we´ll go back briefly to the exams and then we´ll have to move with our lessons, guys!

See you then!

February, Tuesday 3rd

Hi there!

One more week and the exams will be here!
Tonight we first corrected vocabulary exercises on page 162 ( adjectives and idioms) and then returned to page 45, where we did exercise 2c.
Then, we moved on to page 46 where we listened to the reading of the article I wish I had married for money, not love ( a genuine example of affluenza ) and did exercise 5a on the next page: it was about unreal uses of past tenses (see THE PPP ON THE TOPIC ) and then, there we stopped! There was time for no more!
Toby´s time was devoted to make your reflect on value: on the very word and what it  represents for each of you all. Great (and light-hearted) debate, guys!!

More on Thursday, see you guys! Remember to have your questions /doubts ready for that day!

No wonder why translating isn´t appealing ;-)
Hello guys!

Tonight´s class was fun, wasn´t it? We corrected the inversion activity on page 143, did the usual test-on-the-screen and moved on to the reading activities on page 42 (5b, 5c and 5d). Only when we finished with that did we do exercise 4 (words with "silent letter") and exercise 6 ( translating does not seem to appeal to any of the people in class, but acting, being a geologist, a musician, an air traffic controller ...all of them  do :-) Cool!

There we stopped. We are beginning unit 3C. Are you suffering from Affluenza? tomorrow.

See you in the usual at the usual!

Hi there!

Today we started unit 3A. Breaking the silence by doing the exercises on Sounds and the human voice (page 161), and then we used some of this new vocabulary to do exercise 1f on page 36 (we listened to some sounds-a mosquito buzz, a guy snoring... and had to tell the story). Then we moved on to exercise 3c (we skipped 3b because of the length of the activity) . We listened to that hard interview with Julian Treasure ( do you fancy watching his video and know more about NOISE?) and also answered the nine questions shown. And finally , we had time to quickly do exercise 4a on page 38 and read about WAYS TO SHOW SPECULATION AND DEDUCTION. And there we stopped!

Please, don´t forget to do exercises a and b on page 142 for our next Tuesday class.

Hi there!

We have just completed unit 2B by checking more idioms (To do time, behind the times and others) and answering your selection fo questions from the questionnaire on page 27. Some topics were controversial but the activity was worth it!
We have also started unit 2C: Fifty ways to leave your lover, where we focused on the quote first, then did exercise 1a and read text number 1 in the Getting your own back section. We also used the options present in lexis in context for the first five blanks.
Finally, we listened to Paul Simon´s song fifty ways to leave your lover and answered some questions about it... we´ll do more on Tuesday!

Hi guys!
Yesterday we first corrected the Thanksgiving Trivia ( 1.b -2.a -3.a -4.b -5.c -6.c- 7.a -8.b- 9.b -10.d), and then worked on page 27 (exercises 4a, 4b and the TIME-RELATED vocabulary  on page 159). Then, Toby´s time with hisTIME PROVERBS AND SAYINGS activities in groups. You all gave your most approximate definitions (good job!) but in order to clarify ideas, please check meanings below:

1The early bird catches the worm
You will get an advantage if you do something immediately or before anyone else.
2 A stitcht in time saves nine
Acting quickly when something goes wrong  will save you time later, because the problem will get worse if you leave it.
3 Make hay while the sun shines
Make good use of an opportunity while it lasts.
4 When the cat´s away the mice will play
People will naturally take advantage of the absence of someone in authority to do what they like.
5 It´s no use crying over spilt milk
It isn’t worth making a fuss about a misfortune that has happened and can’t be changed or reversed.
6You can´t teach an old dog new tricks
You can’t make people change their ways when they are past a certain age.
7 Don´t count your chickens before they´re hatched
Don’t treat something that hasn’t happened yet as a certainty.
8. A watched pot never boils
When you are impatient for sth to happen, it seems to take longer.
9. We´ll cross that bridge when we come to it
We’ll deal with the problem when and if it arises, rather than worry about it beforehand.
10.Strike when the iron is hot
Make use of an opportunity immediately as soon as it occurs (in case it later disappears).

We also had time for more DIVERSE IDIOMS

For Thursday, please don´ forget to prepare the answers for TWO questions of your choice from the two sections on the Time questionnaire on page 27. Do also reflect on our next Thursday´s 7 EXTRA idioms (on the back of your Time proverbs and sayings):

  1. TO WORK AGAINST THE CLOCK     5. ON THE SPUR OF THE MOMENT
  2. TO LIVE FROM DAY TO DAY        6. BEHIND THE TIMES
  3. A NINE DAY WONDER                     7. TO DO TIME
  4.  THE ELEVENTH HOUR
See you all tomorrow!
